From www.ThePittsburghChannel.com (WTAE)Teen Plans To Run For Mayor18-Year-Old Runs On Platform Of Hope, LeadershipPITTSBURGH, Updated 7:46 p.m. EST January 2, 2001 -- Josh Pollock, a
senior at the Pittsburgh School for Creative and Performing Arts, is making
plans to run for mayor. Pollock, 18, who plays guitar for the local band Five8Five, says that he will challenge incumbent Mayor Tom Murphy and his likely opponent, City Council President Bob O'Connor, because he can't bear the thought of making voters choose between the two candidates. Pollock wants to get into the Democratic primary. "I'm offering myself and if people want to take me seriously, they're welcome to it," Pollock said, adding that he wants to be a voice for the young people in Pittsburgh. Pollock said that he plans to use his music as a means of campaigning. He's also going to use the help of some of his friends, who have volunteered for his campaign. Pollock and his friends said that they are tired of politics as usual and are drawing inspiration from Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura. Out of Pittsburgh's 54 mayors, the youngest ever elected was Jonas McClintock at age 28. That was in the 1800s. O'Connor said that he welcomes another candidate. "Whether he's a legitimate candidate or not, I don't the person," O'Connor said. But I think it's good that we stir the pot and a lot of people show different interest in different issues." A spokesperson for the mayor said: "We certainly appreciate Josh's enthusiasm." Pollock said that he's a legitimate candidate. He plans to go out in the next few weeks and get the petition signatures he needs. Pollock has yet to establish a campaign platform or raise money for the campaign. So far, he said, he has raised $7.40. |
