Campaign for a Sensible Budget

Project of Citizens Budget Campaign /W. PA.
c/o  The Thomas Merton Center
5125 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15224

As individuals & organizations from Western PA. we say our federal budget should reflect the needs and priorities of our people and the common good.

We urge Congress to vote “NO”  on the federal budget for 2003 in which President George W. Bush proposes to:

  • Increase the military budget by $48 billion, equal to budgets of the next 25 nations combined, or nearly $400 billion, including  billions for new nuclear bombs and costly cold war weapons;
  • Make the tax cuts for the richest Americans permanent. They were passed in 2001 when a budget surplus was projected,  instead of the current deficit;
  • Give new tax cuts to corporations and the rich, increasing the relative tax burden of  America’s working families;
  • Ignore the need to save our Social Security programs and use the current Social Security surplus for other purposes;
  • Severely cut funds for human needs, including environmental protection, transportation, community development , job training and employment programs.

"I am against war, against violence, against violent revolution, for peaceful settlement of differences, for nonviolent but nevertheless radical changes. Change is needed, and violence will not really change anything: at most it will only transfer power from one set of bull-beaded authorities to another."  Thomas Merton
