The Thomas Merton Center
Pittsburgh's Peace and Social Justice Center, Est. 1972

Singer/songwriter Mike Stout uses music as an artistic outlet and an alternative avenue for activism by illustrating social inequalities through song, educating and moving people to take action.  Also known as a true “labor troubador” of Western PA, he worked for ten years at the United States Steel Homestead plant and served as the last Grievance Chairperson for the Steel- workers Union. When the plant closed in 1986, he fought for andwon more than 10 million dollars in lost wages, severance pay, pensions and unem- ployment benefits for about 13,000 displaced Steelworkers. A familiar face at picket lines, rallies and demonstrations in the Pittsburgh area, Mike Stout speaks through his songs from a solid history of activism. He has released 5 full-length CDs and his latest EP, "There Are No Real Winners In War" examines the present state of conflict and promotes a nonviolent response.

"I am against war, against violence, against violent revolution, for peaceful settlement of differences, for nonviolent but nevertheless radical changes. Change is needed, and violence will not really change anything: at most it will only transfer power from one set of bull-beaded authorities to another."  Thomas Merton
