Rockin’ Against Racism III
The Third Annual Rock Against Racism festival organized by the Merton Center was the biggest and best yet, with seven bands (Rain Quartet, Defiance of Authority, Heart of the Covenant, Beam, Sporadic, Barrett Black Band and Soma Mestizo) keeping the Schenley Park Overlook alive with vibrant sounds.
There was a "Poetry Slam" featuring B-Tree, Vanessa German, Biko, KL and Lisa Stolarski, and speakers from many organizations.
While listening to the action from the stage, those enjoying the afternoon could browse tables where members of dozens of peace and social justice organizations were selling books, passing out literature, and talking about their activities.
Initiated by the Merton Center to bring together musicians, artists and poets and social activists bridging all the racial and ethnic divisions in the city, the event shows an image of what Pittsburgh would look like without racism.
